Dear Parents,
This school year I am challenging my students to read 40 books! This is an effort to encourage students to finish as many books as they can and to foster a love for reading. I am giving them this challenge because kids, as well as adults, can get comfortable reading one type of genre. You are welcome to join in the challenge!
All information and logs will be kept in a Reader’s Notebook (Composition Book) . I will be going over all the requirements for our Reader’s Notebook the first week of school. This year I will provide each student with a Composition Book. Students may decorate their books at home.
Your child will be assigned one of the days of the week to turn in their Reader’s Notebook. With a few exceptions, it is the same day all year long. Each week the students will fill out their Weekly Schedule and write me a letter. I am asking all parents to please sign this Weekly Schedule in order to keep the students accountable and for you to see what they are currently reading. We will begin meeting the week of August 27th.
Here are some tips to help your child rise to the challenge:
1. Have plenty of books available in the home. Cheap books can be
found on Amazon, at yard sales, or ordered through Scholastic.
2. Take them to the public library.
3. Talk with your child about the books they read.
4. Have your child read aloud to you or to another family member or
friend.
5. Take books with you when you leave the house. You never know
when you may have an opportunity to read.
6. Please sign their Weekly Schedule.
I am very excited about our Reader’s Notebooks. I will be discussing this program at Parent Information Night. Please let me know if you have any questions.
Happy Reading!
Mrs. Jones
